GABA(A) Receptors are ionototropic γ-aminobutyric acid type A receptors. Most of the fast inhibitory synaptic transmissions in the brain are mediated by these ligand-gated ion channels in response in to γ-aminobutyric binding.
To date 19 GABA(A) receptors have been cloned in the mammalian central nervous system (CNS) and are classified by their sequence identity into 7 different subunits (α, β, γ, δ, ε, π, and θ). They consist of pentameric structures assembled by different subunits which are mainly permeable to Cl– that act to reduce neuronal excitation.
