GABA(A) Receptors are ionototropic γ-aminobutyric acid type A receptors. Most of the fast inhibitory synaptic transmissions in the brain are mediated by these ligand-gated ion channels in response in to γ-aminobutyric binding.
To date 19 GABA(A) Receptors have been cloned in the mammalian central nervous system (CNS) and are classified by their sequence identity into 7 different subunits (α, β, γ, δ, ε, π, and θ). They consist of pentameric structures assembled by different subunits which are mainly permeable to Cl–that act to reduce neuronal excitation.
