Scientific background
Na+/K+ ATPase enzyme is composed of two subunits, a large catalytic subunit (α) and a smaller glycoprotein subunit (β). The subunits assemble into a heterodimer localized to the plasma membrane1. There are three α subunits and three β subunits expressed in a tissue- and developmental-specific manner2.
The Na+/K+ ATPase β subunit is composed of 302-304 amino acids, depending of the species or tissue location. The polypeptide is a single pas transmembrane protein. The protein structure is primarily helical from the amino terminus until just before the first glycosylation site3.
Beta 3 Na+/K+ ATPase (ATP1B3) is highly expressed in rat lung and testis. It is also present in liver and skeletal muscle4.
