Organic cation transporter 3 (SLC22A3) belongs to the SLC22A gene family. Organic cation transporters (OCTs) are membrane transport proteins involved in many metabolic processes and detoxification. The transporters are responsible for the uptake and intracellular inactivation of numerous endogenous and exogenous substrates including norepinephrine, epinephrine, dopamine, histamine and serotonin. They are also responsible for the uptake of a variety of anticancer drugs1,2. OCT structure is suggested to have 12 transmembrane domains and a large hydrophobic cleft capable of accommodating a wide variety of chemical species3.
In humans, OCT3 is expressed in many tissues; abundantly in the placenta, heart, liver and skeletal muscle. It is also expressed in astrocytes, intestinal epithelium neurons, glia, ependymal cells, and blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier in choroid plexus epithelial cells. The protein is also widely distributed in the brain. OCT expression is detected in several cancer cell lines and tumor tissue samples1-3.

Anti-SLC22A3 (extracellular) Antibody (#ACT-013) is a highly specific antibody directed against an epitope of the rat protein. The antibody can be used in western blot and immunohistochemistry applications. It has been designed to recognize Organic cation transporter 3 from rat and mouse samples. The antibody is unlikely to recognize the protein from human samples.
