Scientific background Cantharidic acid is a lipophilic structural analogue of Cantharidin (#C-170), isolated from Mylabris phalerata (Chinese blister beetle)1. Similarly to Cantharidin, Cantharidic acid is a specific inhibitor of serine/threonine protein phosphatases 1 and 2A. Cantharidic acid was found to be 5 to 12 times more potent against the catalytic subunit of protein phosphatase 2A than the catalytic subunit of protein phosphatase 11. Cantharidic acid is widely used to study the role of protein phosphatases in the regulation of various physiological functions2-4.
