Our bioassay
- Verruculogen inhibits KCa1.1 channels in Xenopus oocytes.Time course of KCa1.1 channel current amplitude upon application of several mycotoxins, including Verruculogen (#V-500). Current amplitude was reduced by 100 nM Paxilline (#P-450), (a), Penitrem A (#P-650), (b) and Verruculogen (c). The horizontal bars represent the period of toxin perfusion.
Scientific background
Verruculogen is a selective blocker of KCa1.1 (high-conductance Ca2+-activated K+, BK) channels. It belongs to a set of tremorgenic indole alkaloids which are lipid soluble and also include Penitrem A (#P-650) and Paxilline (#P-450).2
Verruculogen enhanced the electrically induced twitch contractions in guinea pig ileum, without influencing the contractions provoked by exogenous acetylcholine.1 Verruculogen had similar effects to Iberiotoxin (#STI-400) in inhibiting the early Ca2+ dependent K+ current in CA1 pyramidal cells.3
Target KCa1.1 K+ channels
